The Ripeness Guide

How to tell when produce is at its peak — by sight, smell, and feel. No guessing required.

Peaches

LookDeep golden-yellow blush; no green near stem
FeelSlight give when squeezed gently near the stem
SmellFragrant sweetness at room temperature — if you can smell it, it's ready

Avocados

LookDark green to near-black skin; uniform color
FeelYield to gentle pressure without leaving an indent
TipCheck under the stem nub — green means 1-2 days away; brown means past peak

Pineapple

LookGolden-yellow color reaching at least halfway up the fruit
FeelFirm but yields slightly at the base; heavy for its size
SmellSweet tropical scent at the base — the base ripens first

Cantaloupe

LookTan or cream netting with no green tones; stem end indent present
FeelSlight give at the blossom end; heavy relative to its size
SmellFloral, musky sweetness — especially at the blossom end

Mangoes

LookIgnore color — red doesn't mean ripe. Look for full, rounded shoulders
FeelGives slightly to pressure, like a ripe peach; not rock-hard, not mushy
SmellFruity, floral scent near the stem — the clearest indicator

Tomatoes

LookDeep, uniform color with no pale or green shoulders
FeelFirm but yields slightly when pressed; no wrinkled or cracked skin
TipNever refrigerate before peak ripeness — cold kills flavor development

Watermelon

LookDull skin (not shiny); large creamy-yellow field spot on one side
FeelFirm and symmetrical; heavy for its size
SoundKnock on it — a hollow thud means ripe; high-pitched means under

Kiwi

FeelYields gently to pressure — the only indicator that really matters
LookBrown, fuzzy skin with no visible soft spots or wrinkles
TipPlace next to apples or bananas — the ethylene gas speeds ripening significantly
